Setting Internet Explorer to Check the Default Browser

If you do not see a dialog box asking you if you want to change your default browser when you start a non-default browser, you must change some settings in Internet Explorer to have the non-default browser ask you if you would like to make it the default browser.

Figure 10:

Internet Explorer Default Browser Check dialog

To make the non-default browser ask if it should be made the default browser when it starts:

  1. Start Internet Explorer.

  2. In the Internet Explorer 5 "Tools" menu or the Internet Explorer 4 "View" menu, select "Internet Options"

  3. On the "Program" Tab of the Internet Options dialog, check the option "Internet Explorer should check to see whether it is the default browser".  Click "Ok" to dismiss the dialog.

  4. Exit Internet Explorer and then start the non-default browser.  It should now bring up a dialog asking you if you would like to make it the default browser.  Click "Yes".

Note: If the above procedure does not work, you may have to click the button "Reset Web Settings..." in the Internet Options dialog.
